Progress: Meet the Tech Top 50 ‘Company Culture’ Honoree

The MassTLC Tech Top 50 celebrates tech companies and leaders across the region who have made a significant impact in the community during the past 12 month. This year, we are excited to recognize winners across 8 categories: Best Pivot to Meet the New World, Business Accomplishment, Company Culture, Inclusivity Impact, Leadership, New Company of the Year, Tech for Good: Social Responsibility, and Tech to Watch.

Forty-nine honorees were chosen across these categories, with the final recognition, the Mosaic Award, given to Chevalier “Chevy” Cleaves, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer of MIT Lincoln Laboratory, for his work creating access and opportunity for future leaders. View the full list of winners, here.

Over the course of the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing more about each of the recipients to spotlight their accomplishments and their impact on customers, partners, employees, and the broader community.

Today, meet Progress, one of this year’s honorees for Company Culture.

Describe your company culture. What are your values and beliefs? How is it expressed by leaders and employees?

At Progress we call ourselves “Progressers” because we move forward together as a team. Employees are encouraged to experiment without being afraid to fail and that can be felt even when working remotely. Being able to share ideas freely is also evident from the internal engagement survey in 2021 – 94% of employees state that their opinion is valued and respected by their colleagues. Even with a pandemic in place, the company culture didn’t change. The teams continue to collaborate, innovate, and support each other, while the senior management team communicates regularly with the employees, gathers feedback, and adapts processes and policies as needed.

A big part of the Progress culture is the peer-to-peer recognition because no success is too small and deserves to be acknowledged and celebrated. In 2020 nearly 90% of all employees were recognized once and 75% got more than one recognition.

What have you done that is different for your employees, customers, partners, and/or community that has improved/changed your culture?

Progress has continuously displayed how much it values its employees during the COVID-19 pandemic, by putting the health and safety of its people and their families first. The company retained all 1,600 employees during this time and since March 2020 has hired over 500 new people globally. When it comes to the business, the company has successfully met all product roadmap milestones and has met and/or exceeded its financial guidance for the year.

In 2020 and 2021, five new Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) were formed: ASPIRE, Plus, Blacks@Progress, Unidos en Progress and Military Veterans @Progress. In addition, Progress joined MassTLC’s Tech Compact for Social Justice, spearheaded by Progress CEO Yogesh Gupta, to encourage greater inclusion of Black, Latinx and Indigenous people within the technology community in Massachusetts.

In 2021, Progress added International Women’s Day to the global calendar of paid holidays, and Juneteenth to the US holiday calendar.

To keep its developer community connected, the company started hosting weekly shows on Twitch and has over 500 hours of content on the channel already. Progress also transformed its annual dev conference, DevReach, into a virtual week-long event, which attracted nearly 3000 developers from all over the world.

Progress expanded its Women in Tech Scholarship Series as well. In 2021 the company announced the second recipient of the Progress Mary Székely Scholarship for Women in STEM and launched the Progress Software Akanksha Scholarship for Women in STEM in India.

What does it mean to be recognized with the other Tech Top 50 honorees?

It’s an honor to be recognized alongside the region’s best tech companies. We are committed to keep on growing and making a positive impact both internally and externally.
