I moved to Boston 33 years ago
because it was the best place in the country to train as a physician and
scientist – an academic mecca. Since

be?

John Snow. He invented epidemiology by studying a map of
cholera victims in London, and determining that a particular water pump was
responsible for the epidemic. He was so
sure of this, he took the handle off the pump, and ended the epidemic. An amazing blend of intelligence, instinct and
courage.
