2013 MassTLC Big Data Summit: How Data Analytics Will Transform Our World

MassTLC’s Big Data Summit, Quantified,
Connected, Predictive: How Data Analytics Will Transform Our World
, was
held on June 27 at UMass Boston to a packed
room of just under 300 attendees.
MassTLC President
& CEO, Tom Hopcroft kicked off the morning with the Council’s dedication to the Big Data sector
and the many efforts in helping to ensure Massachusetts remains one of the top
competitive regions. Following Tom was Secretary of Housing and Economic
Development for the State of Massachusetts, Greg Bialecki
.
Secretary Bialecki spoke of the Administration’s dedication and support through
their Big Data Initiative.
Our keynote,
Martin Fleming IBM’s Chief Economist and Vice President Business
Performance Services, as well as one of the leaders of IBM’s Smarter Planet
strategy development and execution, set the stage with his talk on connected
cities. Martin spoke of the key factors in building a connected city,
including: a skilled and educated population; strong transportation system and
infrastructure; and public safety. Martin also spoke about the importance of
public and private support. All of this could not be obtained however without
the use of data, which will enable a city to make informed decisions.

keynote here.

Following our keynote the
audience broke off into our interactive breakout sessions:
  • Connected Health: How data will transform the
    physician and patient experience
  • Transportation: The future of getting from here
    to there
  • Personalized Medicine: Using data to tailor
    individual treatment plans
  • Data Mashups: How to derive customer value
Connected Health: how data will transform the physician and patient
experience
Puneet Batra, Chief Data Scientist at Kyruus and Iran Hutchinson, Product Manager at InterSystems led a fantastic conversation on connected health
and the impact of data on the physician/patient experience.  The lively audience agreed that there are
challenges unique to healthcare vs. other industries.  First, there is HIPAA. In order to gain
access and analyze the data without patient approvals, the data has to be made
anonymous.  Next, the variety of data in
healthcare is a massive challenge.
Lastly, integrating the data and having a view of all data from disparate
systems is critical to making sense of it to improve care.  There are many challenges to overcome.
However, the audience agreed that if you can show REAL business value to the
doctor and patient to help improve care and lower costs, access to the data and
overcoming the security and integration issues will happen.

session here.
Transportation: The future of getting from
here to there
Ralph Menzano, Executive Director, Global Transportation
Industry Solutions for Oracle and Brian Harrington,
Executive Vice President and CMO for Zipcar  facilitated a dynamic session on how
data has and will continue to transform transportation.
They began by explaining that
“transit is big data”. For instance Zipcar uses data to gage member experience,
miles traveled, routes traveled and overall how members use their cars.  They expect within two years we will see a
whole new experience of what we can see in our cars, such as Vehicle ID, Safety,
and fleet optimization.
Ralph spoke about the power of
data and how it will provide transparency to the residents that their city is
doing their job, and further help it to compete economically and socially.

Personalized Medicine: using data to tailor individual treatment plans
Richard Dale, COO of OptumLabs led a very interactive audience kicking off
the session with the audience sharing their definition of personalized
medicine.  There were some various
responses but overall, stealing from Wikipedia, it is a medical model that
proposes the customization of healthcare – with medical decisions, practices,
and/or products being tailored to the individual patient.  Richard described it as healthcare based on
your n-of-1 with evidence-based screening and interventions.  Next Richard and audience members shared
solutions that exist in the market today and forward thinking ideas that can
help tailor individual treatment plans for patients.  Thanks to all the participating in the
discussion.

Data Mashups: how to derive customer value
Chris Selland, Vice
President of Marketing at HP/Vertica, Chris Steger, Director of
Product at Skyhook Wireless and Sophie Vandebroek,
CTO and President Xerox Innovation Group at Xerox Corporation came together to
provide their insights into how companies can extract value from the multiple
types of data.
A major theme that came from this
session was customer care. You must be aware of what your customer wants and
needs and utilizing numerous types of data can provide you with those insights.
And just monitoring social media is not enough, service providers need to take
action. In today’s world, organizations can personalize to their customer base
and provide a truly great experience leading to retention.
Another theme is to understand
what the needs are and using data to streamline. Organizations must know the
questions they want answered in order to create true value from the data.

The Summit concluded with a
closing panel, All in on big data – How MA dominates. Moderated by Dave Power, President, Power Strategy, the panel
members each spoke on what they were doing within their organizations to ensure
the Massachusetts dominates in the big data tsunami. The panel included Tim Healy, CEO of EnerNOC, Patrick Larkin, Director
of the Innovation Institute and Deputy Director of the MassTech Collaborative; and Dr. Susan Windham-Bannister, President
and CEO of the MA LifeSciences Center.
We have the knowledge, the
support of the public sector, and the industry. Collectively, it is ours to
lose.
