unCon 2013 Session: Employee Happiness: Beyond Beer and Ping-Pong

 Moderator: Sebastian Fung,

What is corporate happiness? This
was a common question and recurring theme throughout Sebastian Fung’s session,
Employee Happiness: Beyond Beer and Ping-Pong. Leading off the discussion,
Sebastian posed the question to the group: what makes you and/or your employees
happy? This snowballed into an ongoing discussion from beer carts being wheeled
around the office on Fridays to team building exercises of taking walks outside
of the office.
Throughout the discussion, it seemed
the idea of organized meetings or events was mutual amongst the group. Some
people have quarterly corporate outings where employees meet offsite and go
golfing or bowling, while others have weekly scavenger hunts that are organized
by a different department every week. Overall, the result of these meetings
leads to employee bonding and engagement that wouldn’t necessarily happen on a
day-to-day basis.
However, sharing each other’s experiences
also led to mixed opinions and uncommon methods of company culture. Some people
believed in spontaneous events where the work day would be replaced with some
other activity or cash reward. Others described open-door policies, homogenous
cultures, and even the one-veto policy in the hiring process.
Ultimately, it comes down to what
works for your company. What may work for one business, doesn’t mean it’s going
to work for yours. Your product, goals, and methods are different, which means
your culture will be too. Therefore, the goal is to define your company culture
and make sure the people in it and who you hire are a fit. At the end of the
day, this will result in corporate happiness.
