Overview of the California Consumer Privacy Act

MassTLC and Foley Hoag partnered to provide MassTLC members with an overview of the impending California Consumer Privacy Act – better known as CCPA – which goes into effect in June 2020 and its comparison to GDPR now in year two.

Both laws protect consumers and their right over their own data, but they do differ on the definition of the consumers they protect and the data that belongs to them. And this leaves companies in the difficult and at times costly position of interpreting and adhering these complex regulations.

US Privacy Legislation

And CCPA may be the first robust piece of privacy legislation for the US, it will not be the last. Many states are working towards more comprehensive versions of their current regulations while others are creating new ones from scratch. Many may see what works well from CCPA, take those and tailor to their own state needs. One thing is for sure, any company that takes in and manages data is going to have to adhere to a patchwork of state and international regulations going forward.
