MassTLC CEO Tom Hopcroft: A Message of Unity

Over the weekend, our nation witnessed another horrific act of hatred and violence at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. Our friend and colleague Audrey Russo, President & CEO of the Pittsburgh Technology Council, penned a moving statement about the values we share as a nation and a tech community. Her sentiments bear repeating as a counterweight to the growing divisions in our country.

We are a nation of immigrants from all over the world. What binds us together are our common ideals – that we are all equal and that what matters is hard work over heritage. We are unique in this way. We draw strength from our diversity. And the result is an economic and innovative powerhouse that is the envy of the world.

While hatred has touched us here in Boston as well, the strength of our business, faith and political leaders have been a shining example of how a community can rebound after moments of tragedy, reaffirm the good, and stand up to the bad in human nature.

Our lawmakers and our Attorney General work hard to balance the needs of our growing innovation economy with those of protecting our citizens. We welcome immigrants and people of all races, ethnicities, religions, and orientations. We work to strengthen connections around the globe, and we work at home to have a more equal and inclusive workplace and community.

We know there is much work to be done, and we see that working together and embracing our differences really does make a difference. This hard work is the reason that Massachusetts is ranked number one in innovation. Yet there is so much more that needs to be said and done.

The currents of good and evil exist in the world and while this is a battle that is never won, we will continue to stand for the values of love and compassion, open our arms to people from around the world, create opportunities for people in our communities, and build a better society and industry along the way
