Highlights from the 2019 Technovation Showcase

This year’s Technovation Challenge was another great year for TechnovationMA and TechnovationRI. Twenty-eight teams of girls from Massachusetts and four from Rhode Island completed the challenge, and twenty-six of these teams participated in the Showcase and Posterboard event at Wentworth Institute of Technology on May 11th.

Many of the dozens of volunteer judges—technology and business experts from local tech companies—attended the showcase to meet the teams and finalize their scores. They all came away impressed with the amazing projects that the teams created and the incredible poise of the girls as they pitched their app and business ideas.

The showcase culminated in the Live Pitch portion of the day. The five top scoring senior division teams and the top two junior division teams were selected to pitch in front of the audience of approximately 150 people and a panel of four distinguished industry judges.

The panel consisted of: Lynn Bailey, CEO of Index Data; Monique Fuchs, AVP of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Wentworth and Co-Founder of Accelerate; Mike Kinkead, Entrepreneurial Consultant; and Liz Miller, Director of Engineering at Kronos.

The top teams (and their apps) were:

  • Junior Division
    • Match Unlimited (Match Unlimited)
    • Team Tangerine (Food Platter)
  • Senior Division
    • Altera Design (TMPRTR)
    • Function 5 (Senior Media)
    • JEM (Walk the World)
    • Nedlam (MyHSOnline)
    • NSHS Thursday (AinD)

The top finisher from the juniors was Match Unlimited, whose app matches donors with food banks. Among the seniors, NSHS Thursday came in third with their app, AinD, which aims to help victims of natural disasters with offline communication; Nedlam, with MyHSOnline, which curates information about school and community activities for students, came in second; and Altera Design came in first for TMPRTR, an app equipped with hardware that monitors the safety of both pets and infant while they are inside a car.
