AI in Healthcare: GE & Partners

Healthcare is one of the industries that is most ripe for disruption due to artificial intelligence (AI), and Boston is at the epicenter of efforts to bring AI to this field. With its world-class healthcare institutions and cutting-edge AI research, the city has enticed organizations like IBM Watson Health and GE Healthcare to move their headquarters here. Now, GE is teaming up with the state’s largest nonprofit hospital network, Partners HealthCare, to develop AI-driven applications that will improve healthcare delivery.

The initial areas of collaboration will be in medical imagery due to the relative ease of reading and analyzing imagery data now that it is digital. Applications in genomics, population health, and other areas will be coming in the future. With the digital health field expected to grow from $61 billion in 2013 to $233 billion in 2020, the region is attracting both established companies as well as startups.
